Winnie Willis --- a 12-year-old horse gentler who runs her own business solving the behavioral problems of horses of all kinds.
Jack Willis (Odd Job Willis) --- Winnie's inventor dad who spends the bulk of his time trying to create the next great discovery.
Lizzy Willis --- Winnie's younger sister who loves lizards and has a passion for creative cooking. Lizzy's simple faith holds the Willis family together.
Madeline Edison --- a single parent and friend of Jack Willis who is also an inventor.
Mason Edison --- the seven-year-old son of Madeline who sometimes lapses into autistic-like retreats from the world.
Victoria (Hawk) Hawkins --- Winnie's friend and owner of Towaco, an Appaloosa whose behaviorial problems match Hawk's family problems.
Geri --- Lizzy's best friend and cooking partner who adores frogs.
Calvin (Catman) Coolidge --- Winnie's eighth-grade friend who loves cats and all things from the '60s.
Bart and Claire Coolidge --- eccentric but lovable parents to Catman. Bart is a used car salesman and Claire runs a beauty salon. They both enter countless contests to help support the family.
Pat Haven --- owner of Pat's Pets, where Winnie works part-time on the animal helpline, as well a permanent substitute teacher and a good friend to Winnie.
Eddy Barker --- Winnie and Catman's friend who loves dogs with the same passion that Winnie loves horses and Catman loves cats.
Mr. and Mrs. Barker --- Eddy's parents who teach at a local university and go to church with the Willis family.
Summer Spidell --- a classmate and an enemy of Winnie's whose father owns the pricey horse stable in town called Stable-Mart.
David Stutzman --- the new veterinarian in town who encourages and supports Winnie's work.
Ralph Evans --- the in-between pastor at Winnie's church.
Ms. Brumby --- Winnie's English teacher who reminds Winnie of a bay Brumby horse, completely dressed in brown and almost too disagreeable to train.
M --- the mysterious guy friend to Catman whose real name no one knows, but is the instigator in the gift horse mystery that involves Winnie.
Salena Fry --- a friend of the popular Summer Spidell who receives a miniature named Amigo for Christmas and hires Winnie to train him.
Kaylee Hsu --- a classmate of Winnie's who enlists Winnie's help in rescuing an abused buckskin called Bandit.
