When school starts, Judy Moody is not all that excited. In fact, she's in a bad mood just thinking about it. But when her teacher assigns each of the students to make a collage about themselves, she thinks this could be pretty interesting. She starts gathering pictures and things that she can use to show what she wants to be (a doctor) and her favorite hobby (collecting all kinds of things). The project is going pretty well, until she has to come up with "a favorite pet," and "a club you belong to." Next thing you know, Judy Moody is the proud owner of a Venus Flytrap and a member of the T. P. Club (and you'll never guess what the T.P. stands for!)

Enjoy the antics and adventures of Judy Moody as she finds her collage project, and her life, going from bad to worse. Is she just unlucky, or is it all in the way you look at things?

When Jessica Finch wins the North Virginia Spelling Bee and gets her picture on the front page of the newspaper, Judy Moody is jealous! And to make things worse, it seems everyone she knows has had a moment of fame for something. Her jealous mood really hits rock bottom when her little brother, Stink, decorates their refrigerator with the Moody Hall of Fame and Judy can't find anything about herself to contribute.

Of course, Judy Moody is very imaginative and soon she's coming up with any number of schemes to make herself famous, including entering Mouse, their cat, in a Fur and Fangs Famous Pet Contest. When none of her ideas work out quite the way she planned, she thinks that all is lost. But Judy Moody is about to discover something wonderful about herself that will make having a picture in the paper seem very unimportant.

Everyone knows that Judy Moody has a mood for every occasion, and now a visit to Boston has put our famous third grader in a revolutionary mood. When Judy meets an English girl named Tori at the Tea Party ship, she is astounded to learn how many liberties her British friend enjoys --- her very own phone, private toilet, and pounds of allowance. When a day of cheerfully doing her chores doesn't earn Judy Moody more rights, and staging a revolt in the form of a tea-throwing Boston Tub Party has her dad reading the riot act, Judy is forced into temporary retreat. Who would guess that a real-life crisis involving her brother, Stink, would finally give Judy a chance to show her courageous quick thinking --- and prove her independence, once and for all?

Judy Moody Book Cover ArtJUDY MOODY: Around the World in 8 1/2 Days
by Megan McDonald
illustrated by Peter Reynolds
Candlewick Press
Hardcover: 0763628328
Paperback: 9780763635725
Ages 6-10
176 pages

Judy Moody is not pleased when a stranger named Amy Namey sits down with Judy's group of friends at lunchtime. Judy is even less pleased when Amy turns out to be (at least as far as Judy can tell, in Amy's own eyes) a Super-Important Girl Reporter with her own newspaper. And Judy's displeasure mounts even further as Amy interviews Judy's friends on how to improve the school --- and Judy's buddies are happy to oblige.

Amy, it turns out, also is interested in ABC (already been chewed) gum. Judy has her collection, and so does Amy. What's more, Amy has been to Bubblegum Alley in California, which boasts two walls of ABC gum.

Rocky and Frank tell Judy later that Amy is just like Judy. Their names both rhyme. Judy dresses like Elizabeth Blackwell, the First Woman Doctor, while Amy dresses like Nellie Bly, Daredevil Reporter. Judy is intensely bothered by this because she prides herself on being one of a kind.

She perks up a little, though, when Amy invites her to join the My-Name-Is-A-Poem club. People from all over the world who have rhyming names belong. She can carry a cool membership card and write to other members. Maybe Amy Namey could be a friend instead of an enemy.

Trouble ensues though when Judy begins dressing like Amy and choosing to go to Amy's club meeting rather than the Toad Pee Club she's in with her old friends. Rocky and Frank are angry about being shunned, but they soften a bit when Amy tells Mr. Todd's class all about Nellie Bly's trip around the world.

Mr. Todd decides that Class 3T will learn geography by tracing Nellie Bly's journey around the world. They even get to watch the movie Around the World in Eighty Days. Frank, Rocky, Jessica Finch and Judy are assigned to learn everything about Italy and then present it to the class. Although the boys are fixated on pizza, Judy talks them into learning the Italian dance called the tarantella.

Meanwhile, Judy visits Amy Namey. They make postcards for others in their club and gum from a kit. The gum-making gets a little out of control, however, with gum (including pickle flavor) all over the place.

Judy Moody is a delightful character. As always in this series, Judy (and the reader) acquires knowledge about different topics. In AROUND THE WORLD IN 8 ½ DAYS, Judy learns about Nellie Bly, Italy and spiders. She also picks up a few social skills while figuring out how to deal with new and old friendships. This book is highly recommended as a fun yet smart read (plus the illustrations are adorable).

JUDY MOODY GOES TO COLLEGE
by Megan McDonald
illustrated by Peter Reynolds
Candlewick Press
ISBN: 9780763628338
Ages 6-10
144 pages

Judy Moody is in a mood. Not a good mood. And definitely NOT a math mood. The substitute teacher in Class 3T thinks Judy's math skills need improving. So Judy has to start meeting with a math tutor. Does this mean flash cards? Does this mean baby games? Does this mean school on weekends? But when Judy meets her tutor --- a sick-awesome college student with an uber-funky sense of style --- and gets a glimpse of college life, Judy's bad math-i-tude turns into a radical glad-i-tude. Pretty soon, Judy's not only acing her math class; she's owning it. Time to say good-bye to Judy Moody, old skool third-grader, and say hello to Miss College! Small-tall upside-down backward non-fat capp with extra whip, anyone?

It's her funniest adventure yet! A few sessions with a college-age math tutor turn Judy into a jargon-spouting polygon princess. Crucial! Reviewed by Terry Miller Shannon and excerpted.
