AMELIA BEDELIA Series
by Peggy Parish and Herman Parish

Fast Facts

  1. The idea for Amelia Bedelia came from Peggy Parish spending time with some of her students at the Dalton School. They would often respond literally to the things she would say. If she told them, "Let's call roll," they would respond by saying "Hey, Roll!" Peggy wondered what it would be like if a person always thought literally.

  2. Amazingly, Peggy Parish had doubts about submitting the manuscript for Amelia Bedelia, because she thought the idea seemed so obvious. She was afraid that her editor would send the manuscript back and tell her to write something new. Fortunately, for Peggy and her fans, the editor immediately accepted it.

  3. Peggy once spent an afternoon cutting up sponges, stirring them in a cake batter and putting it into the oven. She didn't know whether the cake would turn soggy, burn up or remain "spongy." It stayed spongy, so she was able to include this same incident in GOOD WORK, AMELIA BEDELIA.

  4. Peggy Parish wrote 12 Amelia Bedelia books in all, while her nephew Herman has added five more stories to the series.

  5. Herman Parish says Amelia Bedelia is very much like his aunt --- Peggy was also known for taking things too literally.

  6. One of Herman's most treasured memories is when a child wrote a fan letter to Peggy Parish, saying that GOOD DRIVING AMELIA BEDELIA (which Herman wrote) was the best book she had ever written. That was the best compliment Herman could have ever received.

  7. In a number of Amelia Bedelia books, Amelia makes one of her delicious desserts. This cheers people up and they forgive her for all the mistakes she makes.

  8. There are many "firsts" for Amelia Bedelia in this series --- her first camping trip, her first babysitting experience, her first baseball game and her first time running for political office.

  9. HarperCollins released AMELIA BEDELIA, BOOKWORM in August 2003 to celebrate Amelia Bedelia's 40th birthday.
