Reading by Flashlight

I still am sleepy from changing the clocks this past weekend. I lost an hour of sleep and I still cannot catch up. Are you feeling the same way? I am picturing you all with your heads on your desks at school taking little siestas during your first classes of the morning. Of course then at night you are WIDE awake like me. I am hoping my body clock catches up soon. Of course, if I would just go to sleep at night instead of staying up reading, it would be a good thing.

When I was little the light switches still made noise when they went on. There was a loud CLICK. My parents changed my switch to a "silent one," much like what you probably have now at your house since I used to wake everyone up with my early reading habits. I also was known for reading under the covers at night with a flashlight. Now there are all kinds of booklights for reading in bed, but when I was young, there was only a flashlight. Do you get up early to read, or read with a flashlight in your bed at night?

We have lots of great reading on Kidsreads.com in this issue, whether you read above or below the covers.

Meg Cabot has written countless books for teens and adults --- maybe your older sibling reads The Princess Diaries or The Mediator series. Now Cabot is publishing a brand-new series for kids called Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls, and the first book, MOVING DAY, is in stores now! Allie likes to keep things orderly, so she thinks rules are a big help. With every hilarious new adventure, she finds more rules, like "Don't stick a spatula down your best friend's throat." Click here to read a Q&A with Cabot for the inside scoop on this new series.

Are you a fan of the Artemis Fowl series? Well, Eoin Colfer has penned another winner with AIRMAN, an edge-of-your-seat historical adventure novel. The story follows 14-year-old Conor Broekhart through royal plots, prison tortures and escape plans. You don't want to miss this book!

AIRMAN can be a little dark, so if you need a good laugh, check out OGGIE COODER by Sarah Weeks. Oggie is not your typical fourth-grader, and even his classmates and teachers agree. Do you know anybody who crochets their own shoelaces? Well, Oggie does that. He also carves cheese into interesting shapes with his own teeth. So why is the most popular girl in school trying to be his friend? You'll have to read to find out!

In addition, several of your favorite series have new books on the shelves: DARK RIVER, the continuation of Erin Hunter's Warriors: Power of Three series; THE DAY OF THE DJINN WARRIORS, the fourth installment in P. B. Kerr's Children of the Lamp series; THE MINIONS OF TIME and THE AUTHOR'S BLOOD, the final two books in the Wormling series by Jerry B. Jenkins and Chris Fabry; and AMELIA BEDELIA'S MASTERPIECE, which marks the return of our favorite literal-minded housekeeper.

If you love Dr. Seuss, ask your parents to let you see Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! at your local theater. The movie is uproarious Seuss-y fun! Want to brush up on all things Seussical? Take a look at our Dr. Seuss feature, where you'll find information on the books, trivia and more.

This week Warner Brothers announced that the seventh Harry Potter movie will be split into two parts. There's so much good stuff packed into the last book that they don't want to cut a thing! The first part will come out in 2010, and the second will premiere a few months later. Look for the sixth film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, to come out this November.

And last, but certainly not least, we'd like to point out that March is Read Across America Month. There are lots of ways that kids, teens and parents can celebrate, not only in March but throughout the year as well. Click here to learn more. Of course you can always get lots of bookish suggestions in our Cool New Books, New in Paperback and review roundups!

March came in like a lion...may it leave like a lamb. I say this line since my two sons who are 13 and 18 still tease me about a couple of years ago when I wrote in a newsletter that I wanted it to be a lamb/lamb month. I am happy that I still amuse them. Here's to your finding something to amuse YOU this month on Kidsreads.com. Bring on spring.

Author Talk: Meg Cabot, Author of ALLIE FINKLE'S RULES FOR GIRLS

Bestselling author Meg Cabot has written several popular series for teens, including The Princess Diaries, The Mediator and 1-800-Where-R-You, as well as the adult-oriented Heather Wells Mysteries. Her latest book, ALLIE FINKLE'S RULES FOR GIRLS, targets a slightly different age group from that of her previous works --- the under-12 crowd. In this interview, Cabot talks about why she chose to focus her attentions on younger readers and explains how writing for this audience isn't such a stretch from her past efforts. She also points out some of the similarities between herself and her main character and shares what she has in store for Allie in future installments.

ALLIE FINKLE'S RULES FOR GIRLS: Book One - Moving Day by Meg Cabot
Nine-year-old Allie Finkle is not a happy camper when her parents announce that they are moving her and her brothers from their suburban split-level into an ancient Victorian in town. With a room she's half-scared to go into, the burden of being "the new girl" and her old friends all a half-hour car ride away, how will Allie ever learn to fit in? Reviewed by Jana Siciliano.
