A NOTE FROM BOOKER

Hello!

The first week of summer! I hope everyone's enjoying the warm weather and finding time to curl up in the shade with a good book. Here in New York City (where the Worm family lives), we're in the middle of a heat wave; you could cook an egg on the sidewalk if you wanted, it's that hot! Remember to drink a lot of water when you're outside playing these days.

School's out, and I know most of you don't even want to think about teachers, homework, and math tests, but it's hard to resist reading about JUNIE B. JONES , everyone's favorite first-grader. Kidsreads has an interview with Junie's creator, Barbara Park. Junie B. just can't help herself! No matter how hard she tries, she keeps getting into all kinds of scrapes. But no matter how much trouble she gets into, Junie B. will make you laugh as you follow her adventures through kindergarten and first grade.

Also, for those of you interested in American History, Kidsreads has an exciting feature on a controversial and fascinating period: the Vietnam War. The summer of 1968 was a turning point in the conflict, and Kidsreads honors the men and women who fought in Southeast Asia with a feature based on two companion books: WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE?: The Diary of Molly MacKenzie Flaherty, and THE JOURNAL OF PATRICK SEAMUS FLAHERTY: United States Marine Corps.

Whether you're into War History or Junie B's crazy mischief, you can't miss Kidsreads' new features this week! Click on any blue underlined words to go directly to that page, and thanks for reading the newsletter!

Stay cool…

--Booker T. Worm

Friends

Friends are people you care about,
People you trust,
To help a friend you,
you do what you must.

Friends can be tall,
short ar skinny,
there is no limit,
you can have many!

Friends are so special,
I'll give you a clue,
they have to be,
to have a friend like you!

*****

A friend
A friend is someone,
You love and care about.
A friend is someone,
Who love and care about you.
When you have a friend,
You would like to be with your friend.
When you have a friend,
You play and talk with your friend,
Having a friend
Is the most wonderful thing,
Having a friend,
Makes you heart fill with joy.

*****

unicorns and butterflies
dancing in the sky
gnomes and dragons
quickly flying by

talking bears and centaurs
no magical thing gets left behind
all this and more you will find
in the corners of my mind

~*~Do Not Believe~*~

Do not trust me,
For I shall lie.
Do not hurt me,
For I shall cry.
Do not scream,
For I shall flee.
Do not believe,
For this is not me.
Do not cry,
For I shall laugh.
Do not be whole,
For I am half.
Do not love,
For I shall run.
Do not see light,
For I am not the sun.
Do not be true,
For I am blind.
Do not seek,
For I shall not find.
Do not jump,
For I cannot see.
Do not believe,
For this is not me.

this poem is about shattered ideals and high expectations. it is about wanting someone to love me the way I am. It is about how I am wearing a figurative mask. It is about not being able to see what is right in front of my nose... it is about not ever being good enough.

Summer Wind

Let the wind beat you
Let the wind blow your head full of dirt
Let the whistle in your ear

The wind still blows through the tree
The wind makes a little dust tornado
The wind plays a whistling song
In my ear today

The wind still sings in my ear
Humbles it's sweet humble
I keep my ears open
To hear the wind pass by

The wind is gone
No more whistling
What a calm moment
I love the WIND

Jokes from fellow Bookworms

*****

What do you call a fly with no wings? A walk
What lies on its back, one hundred feet in the air? A dead centipede
Have you heard the joke about the garbage truck? Don't worry, it's only a load of rubbish
What do you get if you cross a shark with a parrot? An animal that talks your head off
What do ghosts take for bad colds? Coffin drops
How does a tennis player sneeze? A-tennis-shoe! A-tennis-shoe!
What do witches wear on their hair? Scare spray
If a dictionary goes from A to Z, what goes from Z to A? A zebra
What did the window say to the door? What are you squeaking about, I'm the one with the pane!
How do you stop a dinosaur charging? Take away his credit card
What has one foot and four legs? A bed

I visited your website and I got a huge surprise when I mailed J.K. Rowling. She mailed me back with a signed picture. I just want to say Thanks.

*****

i would like to hear your opinion about Robert Lawrence Stine. He is my favorite author. I have a hundred of his books. I hope to meet him some day. He inspires me to think that mysteries are solved better reading a book than actully working on one. On day I would hope to meet him in person. But I know I know I never will.
