A NOTE FROM BOOKER

Hello!

With summer vacation you will have a LOT more time for reading. Know a friend who likes to read? Forward this newsletter to them and tell them to sign up to get it. Then you can talk about the latest book news together!

As you've probably heard, the people at Disney liked the story about Atlantis so much that they decided to turn it into an animated feature film opening June 15th. In the film, set in 1914, historian/linguist/adventurer Milo Thatch (voice of Michael J. Fox) and a team of explorers search for Atlantis. Their only guide is the ancient Shepherd's Journal, written in Atlantean, that once belonged to Milo's grandfather. What will they discover?

If you're curious about the big-screen version of Atlantis, we encourage you to check out the movie and the tie-in books it has inspired. We're also suggesting some books about the sea and underwater creatures and adventures that you might enjoy. We hope you'll have a splash of a time exploring them.

And now for my news this week...

--Booker T. Worm

HOW I CAME TO BE AN AUTHOR
HOW I CAME TO BE A WRITER, is a biography with some writing instruction, and one writer's personal publication story woven in. Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, the Newbery-winning author of SHILOH and many other popular books, here writes about her early efforts, rejections, and successes.

Reynolds Naylor has written a wide range of books and stories, and you can sample them in this book. HOW I CAME TO BE A WRITER will give you a very real picture of how a person --- maybe you! --- can become a writer and create the books we all love to read.

FINDING HATTIE
By the time Hattie is 14 years old, she has already experienced more tragedy than most people experience in their whole lifetime. Her parents, the aunt who raised her, and her little brother have all died.  Her only surving relative, Uncle Charley, is quite wealthy but doesn't like her; he has, up until now, made arrangements so that he would not have to take care of her. But Hattie's situation has become so desperate that Charley and his wife, Aunt Margaret, take her into their home. They believe charity to Hattie is their "Christian duty". Hattie walks a very thin line. She does something innocently enough that mushrooms into a tragedy. Will she learn where her truest loyalties should lie? How will things work out for Hattie, Fannie, and Sophie? Read this book to find out.

THE GREAT GOOD THING

         I HAVE A DREAM
                 There was no window
                  Until I saw
                   My future dream

Crushed

As I sit, starring at his golden hair,
So smooth so fair,
I know I have a deep crush,
But when mentioned I blush.

There is another,
Whom I love like no other,
Short and funny,
When no one hears, I call him Honey.

Yet other, I see once a week,
I am the one he doth seek,
I like to play hard-to-get,
I love to see him worry and fret.

I know I am a childish girl,
In her hair a slight curl,
But I can scheme,
And I can dream!

Apple pies are very sweet,
even though they don't beat the heat,
Summer days are very hasty,
so eat some apple pie that's very tasty,
But the best sweets of all,
are books you can read all during the fall.
So read a book,
and cut down on the sweets,
reading a book just can't be beat!!!

Whats in a Gift?

Whats in a gift  if you don't like it.
What if its a broken kite?
What if its something messy but someone made it
What if its half bit?

Maybe its from the heart,
or maybe from the shopping cart.
But a gift from anyone,
can always be fun...
because its from them,
something they think you would like
A gift from the heart is much much better then a store bought gift!

A Friend I Know

In my life I met somebody special.
Somebody who excepted me for me,
not because of something else.
She told me she could use a friend,
and so could I.

The next month my friend missed 2 weeks of school.
I thought about her.. thought how sick she was.
Poor Allie.... she came back to school the next Monday,
in a wheel-car, and a breathing machine.

She said she got in a car acident, but little did I know it was something much worse.. the next month was December.
By then Allie was out of her wheel-car and could breathe just fine!
She made a quick recovery.
Every day she calls me weather shes sick or not.
But when I got home today no call.
I thought where was she?
I called her and her mother answered.
Allie has died she had cancer you see.
And at that moment I cried.
Allie wrote me a letter.
I read it aloud

You are much more than a friend, you made me feel good again. You make me happy and are always there for me but I am sorry I never told you about my cancer. Please forgive me. Live a long and happy life.
Allie

Daddy  taught me, A fathers day poem

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Daddy Brave and Tall,
Daddy is Courgeous,
Daddy is strong,
Daddy knew right from wrong,
Better not tell Daddy he was wrong,
Hed beat you til youd admit you were wrong,
If that doesnt work,
Hed take a switch,
Beat you til you forget your name,
Daddy still remains this way,
And when I grow up,
And have some kids,
I'll always do what Daddy did.

I found that The Care and Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls is a really good book for girls and puberty. It covers anything you good possibly think of. My health teacher, my two friends, and I all agree that this is one of the best books for girls.

* * * * *

I really enjoy reading the Tamora Pierce books, and the series T*Witches, a new book by H.B. Gilmore and Randi Reisfeld.  My favorite character is CAMRYN BARNES.  I think she is such a good character.  My favorite girl in the Circle of Magic series is Trisana.  I just don't know why.  I also enjoy reading the DEAR AMERICA SERIES.  They have a new series called, FROM THE HEART OF AMERICA.  It is stories about the war from different perspectives.  Another good book is called THE JOURNAL OF WONG MING CHUNG and a book recommended to me by a friend, OLD YELLER and GWINNA.  OLD YELLER was made into a movie, for those dog fans out there.  Another great book is THE HOBBIT. by J.R. Tolkien.  The sequel is THE LORD OF THE RINGS, and then there is one more book.  I think the last book is the best.  Naturally the last book is, since it is the finale, sort of like the climax.  The first book is an introduction, so it is down low, and then the second book is getting more exciting.  Then, the last book is at the top of the mountain because, it's where their quest ends.  The Hobbit also has lots of funny and good riddles.  A series of Unfortunate Events, is probably one of the best books I have ever read.

* * * * *

I like Arthur books, Arthur is a  bear, Mark brown is the author of Arthur,  My favorite book out of all the Arthur books is  Arthors first sleep over, Arthur has a lot of friends, I like Arthur beckuse his books  are fun to read, Arthurs books make me laugh, I wish Mark brown would write a book about Arthur rideing his bike on a sunney day and if he did I would read it every day after school,

* * * * *

I love your newsletter I think it's a great way to find interesting books and stuff without going all the way to the library and searching for hours on end to find a book that sounds reasonable to you. This newsletter has books for and recommended by kids that they think other kids will enjoy and take pleasure in reading. Your newsletter by far I think is the most helping for example. My daughter who by the way loves your newsletter to before she found out about this newsletter she didn't know how to find books in the library and she didn't know which books she could read with ease and some that would give her a strong challenge. She was surfing one night and her friend from school forwarded her a copy of one of the newsletters. She read it and printed it. She e-mailed her friend on how to get the newsletter and well here we both are reading your weekly newspaper. Now my daughter knows how to find books appropriate for her age,
Thank you Booker

I'd like to tell about a book for young readers called Little Women. It is a
long book, and sort of boring at first, but it is really very sad and happy
too. I would not suggest it to younger readers, and it is hard for me to
read, although I am a REAL bookworm, because it is over 500 PAGES! But if
you are an older and accomplished bookworm, you should read it as a new
challenge.

* * * * *

I love to read! I just finished reading To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I am now reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. Both of these are wonderful books. So far I have read The Hobbit, Johnny Treamain, 20,00 Leagues Under The Sea, Little Women, and many other book, all in 4 months. I hope I can read even more next year, in 5 th grade.
