A NOTE FROM BOOKER

Hi!

 Last night, my nephew called me to ask me to help him do some research. I thought he had a school project to do, so I told him I would be glad to help him out. I told him I had an encyclopedia he could use and that I would help him look up information on the Internet. Well, he laughed, and said that was not the kind of help he needed. It seems he got into a friendly argument with some girls at lunch. He told them that he loves reading all kinds of books, and he bet they couldn't name a book he would not enjoy. Well, they asked him about some of the books in the American Girls series. Since he is a guy, they thought he wouldn't read them. You see, the winner of the bet has to carry the other worm's lunch tray for a week. So, he called me and asked me to suggest one I thought he would like to read. I knew that would be easy for me to help him.

The American Girls series is about seven girls who grew up in America in earlier times. The main characters experience some of our nation's most important historical events. Since I knew my nephew liked to read about war history, I told him to read the books about Felicity, one of the American Girls. The books about Felicity take place during the Revolutionary War. They tell how Felicity and her family cope with all the fear, danger, and excitement of the times. To read some reviews of the books about Felicity, click here. You will find the books to be a great way to learn about history. I have a feeling my nephew will like the books so much, he will want to read all of the books in the American Girls series.

Now, on for my news this week...

Harry Potter
Have you ever wished you could read some of the wonderful books that Harry
and his friends read, like FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM and QUIDDITCH THROUGH THE AGES? Good news! J.K. Rowling is writing publishing these two books! Both books will be available on March 12th, 2001 --- long before Book 5 (rumored to be titled HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX) in the Harry series. And the best part is that the money earned from the book sales will go to the Harry's Books fund, a division of the British charity Comic Relief that is devoted to helping children in need. Be sure to check out our Harry Potter area to keep up to date on Harry's happenings!

The sights and sounds of 17th century London come alive in AT THE SIGN OF THE STAR, in which Meg must forge a bold new future for herself in a society that has very narrow views about women's roles. Read our review, an excerpt from the book, and an interview with the author, Katherine Sturtevant.

The Miracle Worker
-An Inspiration-
I know a girl who was deaf and blind,
and always tried.
I know a girl who failed many times,
but never gave up.
Her family didn't help,
they just let her do what she'd like.
But one day the miracle worker stopped that,
she said you should teach her the right way to act.
And so the miracle worker spent many weeks/days with the child,
and farther down the road she graduated.

Rhinoceros

Rhino, Rhino, your wrinkly coat
Looks somehow wrinklier today
Did you swim in the water?
Did you drink from the bay?

Rhino, Rhino,
Your horns are shining
Did you eat in the field?
Where were you dining?

Rhino, Rhino
You are beginning to sigh
I'm annoying, bothering you?
I gotta run now, bye-bye!

I love to read and I've been looking for a good book for a while. Then I found A Series of Unfortunate Events. They're great! This is a series about three orphans, Violet, Klaus and Sunny, who find themselves living with an evil, greedy man (Count Olaf). This cunning villain is after the Baudelaire's fortune and again and again, book after book he attempts to steal it. The Baudelaire orphans move to Uncle Monty, to Aunt Josifine, to Sir and so on. This author Lemony Snicket (don't worry it's a pen name) is a wonderful author. BUT ONE WARNING if you pick up one of these books expecting a happy ending, PUT IT DOWN IMMEDIATELY. Here are the books in order
* The Bad Beginning
* The Reptile Room
* The Wide Window
* The Miserable Mill
and a fifth is coming out.

They were so great. Each book is much better than the last. I read the American version and the original version. They differed slightly.
