A NOTE FROM BOOKER

Hi!

I hope the new year has started off as a great one for you! I have a friend named Book Mark, who decided to make his New Year's resolution to read three books a week all year. He made a chart and put it up on his bulletin board he has in his kitchen. When he finishes a book, he adds a star on his chart. I told Book Mark he needed to check out some of the great books we are reviewing on Kidsreads.com.

One book I suggested for him is about Martin Luther King, Jr. This African-American leader changed the lives of many Americans by fighting for civil rights and inspiring people to be courageous in their struggles for what they believe is right. You probably have off from school on Monday because Monday is the day we honor Martin Luther King, Jr.'s memory. Why not read a book to learn more about Martin Luther King, Jr.? We have a round-up of books for you to choose from.

Now, on for my news this week...

SNOW DAY
Every winter, kids around much of the country long to hear those magic words --- "snow day" --- which really means: No school! When it comes to snow days, things haven't changed all that much over the years. We've pulled together a list of cool books about snow, snow days, snow sports and all kinds of snowy fun. So grab a mug of hot chocolate, and check out some of the snazzy things you can do on your next snow day!

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. BOOKS
Though his studies and his ministry, Martin Luther King was a champion of civil rights for black people. He led people in the struggle against racism, prejudice and segregation laws, trying to secure equal treatment and respect for all. He was arrested 30 times for his activities. As a powerful and charismatic public speaker, he had many followers. A huge number --- 250,000 --- of those followers turned out in the march on Washington, D.C. in 1963 to hear his "I Have a Dream" speech about an ideal world where skin color would make no difference.

We hope you'll check out the books in this feature to learn more about this African American hero.

A PIECE OF HEAVEN
We all have days when we feel sad and lonely, and usually we get over those feelings quickly. Sometimes, people can't get over the sad feelings by themselves, and they need some help from doctors to help them. In this book, a girl named Haley has to try to hold her family together after her mother has to go to the hospital to get help to stop feeling so sad and depressed. Other New Reviews

THE ROYAL DIARIES, ANASTASIA: THE LAST GRAND DUCHESS
Shortly before the end of World War I, Bolshevik revolutionaries took over the country of Russia. These Bolsheviks became the Communist Party, which ruled the Soviet Union until 1991. In order to rise to power, the Bolsheviks stripped the reigning monarch, Tsar Nicholas II, of his throne, arrested him and his family, and finally murdered them all on July 17, 1918. They buried the bodies in a pit in a forest, believing that the world would never know what had happened to them. They were wrong. Not many years ago, the grave --- and the bodies --- were found. The tsar and his family were finally laid to rest in a burial ceremony 80 years to the day from their execution. Read our review to find out more!

AMERICAN DIARIES: NELL DUNNE: ELLIS ISLAND
In New York Bay, near Manhattan, is Ellis Island. This island, from 1892 until 1943, was the focus of the dreams of millions of immigrants. It served as the foremost receiving station for people from around the world who came to the United States to live. This AMERICAN DIARIES book tells the fictional story of one immigrant family from Ireland --- Nell Dunne, her mother, grandmother, brother, and baby sister. The book begins on February 12, 1904 --- the day, after three weeks at sea, when Nell sees the lights of New York City on the horizon. Read our review of the book.

Mailbag

Poems from fellow Bookworms: I know a little person I never get to see
I always like to think
About the whereabouts of she
One day when I find out just where she is
I'm going to email her
for she is my sissy.
I know some things about her
though I really want to say
I want to know more
Until then I'll try to find
Someone just like
her kind.
But I will never Forget
the sister
which I never met

The Rabbit
Once there was a rabbit named Hoppy
His long dangling ears were very floppy
He climbed up on a tree
And was scared by a bee
He fell down in the mud, now he's sloppy

Last night I had a dream
You were in front of me agleam
We had fun, just the two of us
And oh, how it was joyous
It was like we were actually friends
I wished that had no ends
And when I woke up,
I realized it was trumped up
But then I came up to you
And it was true
You were a totally different person
Our friendship has gotten better, not worsened
In fact, us together is a blessing
I wish to do all the confessing
And to say you're such a great guy
You've been mean to one of a kind
And I'll never forget that in you.

Message in a Bottle
Swiftly drifting,
Swiftly drifting,
Over the calm quiet sea.
Swiftly drifting,
Swiftly drifting,
Waves let it be,
Let it be.
Softly rolling,
Softly rolling,
Swiftly drifting away.
Softly rolling,
Softly rolling,
Maybe it will drift back someday.

I really like Harry Potter too and I wish J.K. Rowling could visit Massachusetts and meet all the kids at the schools in Wilbraham. It's a nice town but it's probably is very different from England. Actually I usually go to England every summer to visit my grandmother in Nottingham. I wonder if J.K. Rowling has been to see Nottingham. Well, I like the things you've got on the website for Harry Potter fans.
