Robie H. Harris' Summer Reading List
 |
"I wanted my kids to stay healthy, so I had to give them accurate information," says Robie H. Harris, whose training and deep interest in child development --- and experience as a parent --- made her realize how difficult but necessary it is to answer kids' questions about sex. Consultations with other parents, kids, educators, doctors, psychologists, and scientists confirmed the critical need for books like IT'S PERFECTLY NORMAL and IT'S SO AMAZING!, which answers kids' questions about sex and sexual health in a manner that assures even the most squeamish reader that "it's perfectly normal." A graduate of the Bank Street College of Education and Wheaton College, where she earned an M.A.T. and an A.B., respectively, Robie has hands-on experience working with kids as director of The After-School Program, Bank Street College Early Childhood Center, Headstart Model Program in New York, New York; as a teacher at The Smallwood Drive School in Williamsville, New York; and as a second-grade master teacher at Bank Street School for Children, in New York, New York. Now a full-time writer, Robie has published 13 books for toddlers to teens. Critics have acclaimed all her books, for which she has received many awards and citations. All her books with Candlewick Press have been collaborations with the illustrator Michael Emberley. Robie's other professional experience includes: writer in the Publications Department, Bank Street College of Education; co-author of daily segments for CBS's "The Captain Kangaroo Show"; and co-producer and director of CHILD'S EYE VIEW, a film for teachers and parents on the daily life of children in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan that was was included in the Lincoln Center Film Festival. Robie is also a popular speaker around the country on topics such as, "Using Children's Books to Talk about the Questions and Concerns of Children," "It's Not the Kids! It's Us! Whose Responsibility Is It to Educate Our Kids and Teens about Sexual Health?", and "Is It Time to Talk About IT? Why We Need to Talk with Our Younger Children about Sex." Her professional affiliations include: co-chair, PEN New England Children's Book Caucus; corporator, Lesley College, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Advisory Board, the PURPOSE Campaign, Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts; and Board of Advocates, Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
